Confidence can be something that is lost over the years as we grow up. This can with some people be a consequence of having negative comments said to them repeatedly over time which has eventually lead the individual to believe they really are inadequate in some area.
For example, if a teacher continually said to a child they are useless at football, and this comment was reinforced by friends or family, the child may start to believe that they are not good at football (even if they truly are), which in turn may lead the child to have a negative view on themselves as a person.
